Human Rights Day by Aycan Yıldız

Every individual has many inherent and eternal rights. These rights are given them simply because they are human beings. Regardless of religion, language, race, colour and gender, everybody has these rights. 10 December 10, 1948, the United Nations General Assembly published the “Declaration of Human Rights” in its 183rd session in Paris and declared the day as “Human Rights Day” to be celebrated every year. The Declaration of Human Rights contains 30 articles, and it has been translated into more than 500 languages, which makes it the most translated document in the world. This declaration ensured that every individual in the world was aware of their rights; therefore, it raised their awareness. To continue this awareness, Human Rights Day is celebrated on 10th December every year. However, there are many situations where these rights are currently ignored in our society. These situations harm people’s rights and negatively affect people physically, mentally, economically and in many other aspects.

According to the Declaration of Human Rights, every human being should be equal. The most important feature of them should be the fact that they are human; however, in many places in the world, so many people have been exposed to both violence and discrimination because of their appearance (e.g., skin colour), race, religion, and language. This violence and discrimination harm people not only physically but also mentally. There are many movements and actions in the world that are organized against these two. For instance, the “Black Lives Matter” movement is a civil society movement that is established against racism and violence, especially by the American police against the people of African American origin living in the USA. Another damage given to human rights is when Jewish people were murdered by Nazi Germany during World War 2.

Another harm to human rights is economic. There are still many females in the world who are paid less than their male counterparts for the same job just because they are women. Because of this, there is an income inequality between men and women. Apart from the gender issue, many people are minorities in society due to their race, religion, and language, and therefore, they earn low salaries.  The images above show the difference in pay that women and people of different ethnicities earn compared to men and majority of society in America (2022), England (2016), France (2016), and Germany (2016). According to the study conducted by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK) and the International Labor Organization, women in Türkiye are paid 15.6% less than men with the same job.

Human rights are the rights that are given to people to live, to be free while living, to be treated equally and fairly when it is necessary, and to lead safe, healthy lives. It is important for people to be treated properly in society. To sum up, in societies where there is justice and equality, where everyone has equal access to shelter, nutrition and education, and health opportunities, people feel safe and peaceful. The reason is they know that they have rights, and the law is always by their side. Human rights exist for us, and it is important to protect them. Everyone should protect and respect these rights. Additionally, people should take care of 10th December Human Rights Day, and they should raise awareness of this day.

Happy Human Rights Day!
